Project Experience

Rail Terminal and Track Construction

During our nearly four decades of operation, Challenger’s team has performed many pre-engineering and construction surveys for the rail industry. Our field crews are trained to comply with the safety processes established by our clients. On railway projects, each crew member completes eRailSafe Canada training.

We’ve gained a reputation as a leading surveyor in the rail sector as a result of the experience that we have acquired in complex track construction and alignment projects. Challenger has also been engaged as the surveyor for numerous construction projects, including terminal projects in Fort Saskatchewan, Joffre, Leduc, and Nisku.

Mass Transit

Our experience also extends to transit projects in both Edmonton and Calgary, including LRT and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT). This has included the construction survey support for new tunnels, station improvements, and specialized track work – much of this work taking place while trains were running.

Highway Construction

Challenger is an experienced survey partner, providing survey support for grading, paving operations and more. On highway projects, our professional land surveyors, civil engineers and survey technicians have supported our clients with a broad range of expertise. This includes services like pre-engineering surveys, stakeouts, deformation monitoring, as-builts, volume calculations, as well as machine control support for earthworks, paving and concrete construction.

Our experience includes working in challenging conditions such as the Inuvik-Tuktoyaktuk Highway Project, and in high traffic areas such as Southeast Stoney Trail in Calgary and Anthony Henday Drive in Edmonton.

Bridge Construction and Replacements

Accuracy and consistency are crucial survey elements of bridge projects, and Challenger provides geomatics expertise as well as quality services throughout. This has included survey control, volume calculations, pre-engineering surveys, as-built certificates and many other services for bridges on the Inuvik-Tuktoyaktuk Highway Project. Our crews also provided precision layout for pile locations, cofferdams, piers, abutments, and other bridge elements for multiple bridge replacements on the Alaska Highway Project.

Airport Terminal and Runway Construction

Challenger’s team has also provided a range of survey services to support the construction requirements of airport runways, terminals, hangars, and support buildings. This includes many projects at the Calgary and Edmonton International Airports. This includes site surveys, control surveys, volume surveys, and topographic plans for buildings and structures. We have also delivered 3D laser scans and as-builts of several key project areas, and legal surveys of tenant lease spaces within the airport. We have also worked on regional airports such as Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport.
