Professional Service for Critical Infrastructure
Challenger has a developed a service-oriented core group of Professional Engineers, Alberta Land Surveyors, survey crews, and survey technoligists with specialized expertise in the construction of road, railways and railyards, LRT lines, airport and other transportation infrastructure.
We offer a full array of survey, mapping, geomatics and GIS services to support every phase of a transportation project, from route planning and right-of-way designation through to construction, final as-built and legal surveys. Client satisfaction is our top priority, and each member of our team strives to exceed expectations in delivering the highest quality service for critical transportation infrastructure.
We are COR-certified and our field staff goes through numerous training programs to ensure a high standard of excellence in the execution of our health and safety processes. This includes first aid and CPR training, CSTS, WHMIS, ATV training, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, traffic control, and other programs.
Challenger is a member of Alberta Roadbuilders and Heavy Construction Association (ARHCA) as well as local construction associations in Edmonton, Calgary, Fort McMurray, the Yukon, and Northwest Territories.
Rail Terminal and Track Construction
During our nearly four decades of operation, Challenger’s team has performed many pre-engineering and construction surveys for the rail industry.
Past rail projects have included staking centre lines and intersections, slope analysis, cross-sections, right-of-way surveys, utility locating, and various types of topographic and engineering surveys.
Our field crews are trained with eRailSafe Canada to ensure each member complies with the safety processes established by our clients, as well as rail industry regulations.
We’ve gained a reputation as a leading surveyor in the rail sector as a result of the experience that we have acquired in various, often complex track construction and alignment projects, including for both CP Rail and CN Rail lines. Challenger has also been engaged as the surveyor for numerous industrial projects, including railyard construction and expansions in Fort Saskatchewan, Joffre, Leduc, and Nisku, as well as several terminal construction projects.
Our experience also extends to transit projects in both Edmonton and Calgary, including LRT and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT). This has included the construction of new tunnels, station improvements and specialized track work – much of this work taking place while trains were running.
Highway Construction and Machine Control
Challenger is an experienced survey partner for roadway projects big and small, providing survey support for grading, paving operations and more.
On highway projects, our professional land surveyors, civil engineers and survey technicians have supported our clients with a broad range of expertise. This includes pre-engineering surveys, stakeouts, deformation monitoring, as-builts, and volume calculations, as well as machine control support for earthworks, paving and slipform concrete construction.
Our experience includes working in challenging permafrost conditions and remote locations such as the Inuvik-Tuktoyaktuk Highway Project, and high-volume urban corridors like South East Stoney Trail in Calgary and Anthony Henday Drive in Edmonton.
Bridge Construction and Replacements
Challenger provides geomatics expertise for a variety of bridge projects, ranging from early-stage pre-engineering surveys to final as-built certificates.
Whether plan-checking or performing analysis and adjustments of control, accuracy and consistency are crucial survey elements of bridgework. Our surveyors provide precision layout for pile locations, cofferdams, piers, abutments, and other bridge elements.
Challenger’s bridgework experience includes multiple bridge replacements on the Alaska Highway Project, construction of five bridges in permafrost conditions on the Inuvik-Tuktoyaktuk Highway, numerous pedestrian bridges in Calgary and Edmonton, and many others.
Airport Terminal and Runway Construction
Challenger’s transportation specialists provide survey services to support the demanding construction requirements of airport terminals, hangars and other support buildings.
Our experience includes many projects at the Calgary International Airport, including the new international terminal, new control tower, runway expansion, and upgrades to operational infrastructure. This includes site surveys, control surveys, volume surveys, and topographic plans for buildings and structures. We have also delivered 3D laser scans and as-builts of several key project areas, and legal surveys of tenant lease spaces within the airport.
We have also provided quality management and survey support for many transportation projects at the Edmonton International Airport, Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport and other local and regional airports throughout Western and northern Canada. These projects have included runway resurfacing, hangar construction, as well as upgrading utilities or support infrastructure.
