Announcing the Formation of Det’on Cho Challenger Geomatics

Challenger Geomatics Ltd. and Det’on Cho Management LP are proud of the many successful business partnerships we have each established. Together we continue this journey of collaboration with the formation of a new company, Det’on Cho Challenger Geomatics.

Our new company will provide survey, mapping, and remote sensing services within the Akaitcho Territory of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation and be majority-owned by its economic development arm, Det’on Cho Management LP.

The newly formed company will also develop local capacity related to geomatics and enable broader community participation in projects on the traditional lands of the Yellowknives Dene. This partnership includes a commitment to provide training and employment opportunities and use local businesses whenever possible.

In 2018, After decades of operating in Canada’s North, Challenger Geomatics increased its presence and capacity in the Northwest Territories by joining with Sub-Arctic Surveys Ltd., adding a Yellowknife office to the Challenger network.

According to Paul Burbidge, Challenger Geomatics’ President and CEO, “Surveying in Canada’s North has always come with unique challenges; travel to remote locations, difficult terrain, and rapidly changing weather conditions. The Challenger team understands northern projects and the significant challenges they can present. Our partnership with Det’on Cho strengthens our already proven ability to overcome these challenges by enhancing our local knowledge and expertise.”

Founded in 1988, Det’on Cho’s family of companies now employ 600 to 700 people. “This success has been through a lot of hard work and commitment to our Dene values. As we work towards economic reconciliation, more people see value in pro-active participation from indigenous communities,” explained Paul Gruner, Det’on Cho Management’s President and CEO.

Det’on Cho brings an award-winning management team and local knowledge about the land to the partnership, while Challenger Geomatics brings extensive local survey and geomatics capability and experience. By partnering together, Det’on Cho and Challenger will deliver a full complement of high-quality and value-oriented geomatics solutions that the market expects.

Through this partnership, Challenger Geomatics continues its longstanding commitment to supporting sustainable community economic development, and Det’on Cho expands its breadth of service offerings and facilitates employment and training opportunities for Yellowknives Dene community members.

Both Challenger and Det’on Cho are members of the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business (CCAB); Challenger is also a participant in the CCAB’s Progressive Aboriginal Relations Program.
